Promotion for both 1st and 2nd Mixed Teams
Our 1st and 2nd Mixed teams have had a fantstic season, both securing promotion from their respective divisions. The 1st Mixed Team, with back to back promotions, will play in Division 3 of the York and District Mixed Tennis Leagues in 2018. The 2nd team went one better by winning their division with one match still left to play, securing their second promotion in 3 seasons. They will play in Division 7 in 2018.
These succeses can be attributed to an increase in membership, additional coaching sessions for beginners and regular players, and a growing strength in depth for the club as a whole.
A big THANK YOU to Riccall Parish Council who, following our application for a grant to help tidy up the area around the courts, have approved the request and sent a cheque for £400. This has been put to good use already, paying for the cutting back of the hedge at the back of the courts.
Riccall's mens team have taken much of the plaudits for the 2016 season completing their 14 matches in Division 7 of the Tyke Petroleum Mens Tennis League unbeaten. This included matches against the top 2 teams in Division 6. On their way to the title Riccall amassed a League record 152.5 points, winning 1077 games at an average 77 games won per match. With such an outstanding performace it is only fair to name chack those involved; Pat Woodward, Scott Anderson, George Lintott, Alex Trembath, Andrew Dunning, Dave Pegg, Tom Dunning, Dave Stewart, Paul Elmhurst, Rex Pocklington, Sam Mundon, Andy Marshman a guest appearance from Andy Woodward and last but not least 'El Capitano' John Lintott.
The first mixed team had a chance to finish as Division 5 champions in the IT Sports Mixed Tennis League in the last match of the season as we entertained fellow title challengers Rowntree Park 2. With both teams on the same points it really was winner takes all. In the end Rowntree's strength in depth proved to be the match winner but it has still been an excellent season for the first mixed team as they secured immeadiate promotion back to Division 4. Riccall's No. 1 pair Michelle Hall and Andrew Dunning ended the season top of the divisions stats table with a win average of 7.8 games per rubber after 36 rubbers played (12 of the 14 matches).
Riccall's second mixed team ended the season safely mid table in Divison 8 after brief hopes of promotion mid season. It was a very tight division this year with just 4 points seperating top spot and Riccall in 4th. With a number of players stepping up to play for the first team on a number of occasions, and holding their own with some excellent scores, Riccall can be confident they have strength in depth ready for the new season.
The ladies team struggled on a number of occasions to put a full team out in the Fulford Ladies Invitation League this season. This reflected in their end of season position as they find themselves rooted to the bottom of Division 4 heading to Division 5 in 2017. Riccall did gain 3 wins and 1 draw from their 14 matches, had they not conceded 3 matches due to a shortgae of players, resulting in 3 points deducted, it could have been very different. We are hoping for a kinder fixtures calendar and new members to boost our player pool ready for the 2017 season, and hopefully a quick return up the Leagues.
We will be holding and end of season doubles tournament at the courts on Sunday 4th September. The tournament starts at 2pm. Food will be provided we just ask for a £3 entry fee to cover the costs. Look forward to seeing you all on the 4th.

As many of you will have noticed, our existing clubhouse is in poor repair and in urgent need of renovation - if not something more drastic! We are exploring grant options to help us and have the full support of Riccall Sportsfield Association, our umbrella body.
Please contact the club if you would like to know more or want to contribute in any way.
